Samsung Launches Fitness Watch

The Samsung Gear Sport offers continuous heart rate monitoring and is waterproof to 50m.

(CCM) — Samsung has launched a new fitness-tracking smartwatch to compete with the likes of Fitbit and Apple, according to a CNBC report.

The Samsung Gear Sport, launching in Berlin today, is waterproof to 50 meters and comes preloaded with a swim recording app called Speedo On. It also gives owners a free 12-month premium subscription to Under Armour's UA Record, MyFitnessPal, MapMyRun, and Endomondo fitness apps. The watch offers continuous heart rate monitoring and automatic activity detection to make it easy to get started. It also features customizable goals with alerts to help users stick to their fitness plans. Thanks to a deal with Spotify, users can also download music to their watches to listen to while exercising.

The Gear Sport has a 1.2-inch circular AMOLED 360 x 360 display with a Gorilla Glass 3 screen which can be set to always-on mode. Inside it features a dual-core processor with 4 GB of storage and 768 MB of RAM, Bluetooth, GPS, a barometer, and NFC for Samsung Pay support.

The watch runs on the Tizen mobile operating system, and is compatible with Android and, to a lesser extent, iOS smartphones. Pricing is yet to be announced.
