The new Kirin 970 AI chip will give Huawei a huge advantage over Samsung and Apple, the company claims.
(CCM) — Huawei has unveiled a revolutionary new artificial intelligence chip which it believes will give it a huge advantage over rival smartphone makers like Apple and Samsung.
The company describes the new Kirin 970 chip as the first Neural Processing Unit (NPU) for smartphones, according to a Reuters report. Richard Yu, Huawei's consumer business chief executive, said the chip will help Huawei make phones that can anticipate the actions and interests of their owners and challenge for the number one spot in the highly competitive global smartphone market.
"Compared with Samsung and Apple, we have advantages. Users are in for much faster performance, longer battery life, and more compact design," Yu said in the Reuters report.
Huawei will introduce the Kirin 970 chip in its new Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro smartphones which it will launch on Oct. 16, 2017. Along with Apple, this will make it one of the only two phone makers that rely on their own core processors to power their smartphones. Most other smartphone manufacturers, including Samsung, rely on the same Snapdragon chips made by Qualcomm to power their devices.
Huawei is the world's third largest smartphone maker, after Samsung and Apple.
