Unity is a game engine developed by Unity Technologies. Today the engine is cross-platform although it launched as a Mac OS X exclusivity in 2005. The Unity game engine is widely used for developing mobile games but also for indie games.

What are the key features of Unity?

  • Real-time 3D: Whether you are an artist, a designer, or a game developer, Unity is the perfect match for you because rapid editing and iteration in your development cycles are possible. You can create both 2D and 3D works and preview them in real-time.

  • Deploy: Another great thing about Unity is that you can deploy your creation across over 20 platforms. These include Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, AR, and VR platforms.

  • Scriptable Render Pipeline: Thanks to this feature, you are in complete control over the rendering, whether you want to use the two rendering pipelines as a template to customize their own solution, or to create their own from scratch. Also, with The Universal Render Pipeline, you don't have to customize your code.

  • Tools: Unity comes with all the necessary tools for animation and cinematic tooling, audio and video, Data-Oriented Technology Stack (DOTS), editing, effects, interface-related, lighting, programming, optimization, rendering, worldbuilding, and 2D.

  • Games with Unity: Some of the most famous games out there have been made with Unity, such as Hearthstone, the instant indie hit Cuphead, Pokémon Go, Subway Surfers, Firewatch, Escape from Tarkov, and more - you can check the complete list online.

Is Unity free?

Unity is free for personal use if your annual gross revenues (or fundings) don't exceed $100k. For teams, prices start at $399 per person.

Is Unity safe?

It seems that the engine has no history of security issues or abusive data collecting. As always, we recommend reading the official Privacy policy before installing. In general, the engine seems as secure as any other game engine.

What's better: Unreal Engine or Unity?

Choosing between Unreal Engine and Unity may be hard and there are several factors that need to be taken into consideration. For example, Unity is great for smaller teams and mobile games because of the size of the final product. On the other hand, Unreal Engine offers better graphics, which may be interesting if you are a graphic designer, within a bigger team. There are plenty of interesting comparisons on the Internet.
