Pagefile.sys file - Windows 7, Windows 8 and XP

Pagefiles.sys also called as swap file is a file created by Windows to surmount lack of RAM. This technique for extending the memory system is called "Virtual Memory".

Windows 2000 / XP

Under Windows 2000 and Windows XP, you can ensure that the file pagefile.sys is cleaned when the computer is switched by creating (or modifying) the key ClearPageFileAtShutdown.

You just have to type REG_DWORD with the value 1 under the key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Control \ SessionManager \ Memory Management

Note: This process may however slow down the shut down process of your computer.

Windows 7 / Windows 8

Open the System pane by clicking on Start button, then right-click Computer, and click Properties. In the left pane, click Advanced system settings. Administrator permission is sometimes required, in this case type the password or give confirmation.

Click on the Advanced tab, then under Performance, click Settings, then, under Virtual memory, click Change. Uncheck the check box named "Automatically manage paging file size for all drives". Under Drive [Volume Label], click the drive containing the paging file you need to change.

Click Custom size, enter a new size in the initial size box (MB) or in the Maximum size box (MB) , click Set, and click OK.
