Windows XP - Turn-off button is missing from the start menu

Issue

The "Turn Off Computer" button is missing from the Start Menu, how to get it back?

Solution

  • Click on Start > Run > Type "regedit"
  • Expand the following:
    • HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Policies > Explorer
    • Double Click on the "NoClose" key and set its value to 0
  • Repeat the operation for this entry:
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Software > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Policies > Explorer
  • Close the registry editor and if the Turn-off button is still missing, force reboot your PC , it shall be there at next restart.
