MacBook - Administor password lost

Ask a question

Issue

So you forgot your Apple Macbook admin password and don't have any CD? You're then unable to install any programs as the password is required. What can be done?

Solution

You can try the following procedure but, it will create another account and your old files will still not be accessible. Creating a new Admin on Mac Os X is straightforward. Here's the way to reset your OS X password without an OS X CD. You need to open the terminal in order to create a new admin account:
  • 1. Reboot
  • 2. Press Apple key + s key after you hear the chime (or command + s on newer Macs)
  • 3. When you see the prompt type in these commands (don't forget to hit return after each line):

mount -uw /
rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
shutdown -h now
  • 4. After rebooting you will have a brand new admin account. When you login as the new admin you should delete the old account and you're good to go again!
