Changing the label (name) of partitions.

Getting started

All commands must be given as administrator (root mode).

Give the simplest names possible to partitions (if possible only alphanumeric characters (a. .. z and 0 ... 9) and - and _.

Partition ext2/ext3

There are two commands:
  • tune2fs -L my_label /dev/partition
  • /sbin/e2label /dev/partition my_label

Partition FAT/FAT16/FAT32

You have to install the mtools package.
  • Then type:
    • sudo mlabel -i /dev/partition ::my_label

NTFS partition

You have to install the ntfsprogs package.
  • The command is:
    ntfslabel /dev/partition my_label.
