Issue

I'm getting the following error message at Windows startup :
[shellClassInfo]LocalizedResourceName=0%SystemRoot%\System32\Shell32.dll,-21727

Solution

This happens when a Desktop.ini file exists in one or more of these directories:
  • Drive: \ Documents and Settings \ All Users \ Start Menu \ Programs \ Startup
  • Drive: \ Documents and Settings \ All Users \ Start Menu \ Programs
  • Drive: \ Documents and Settings \ All Users \ Start Menu
  • And that Desktop.ini file (right-click-click the Desktop.ini file and click Open to view its contents) contains:

[shellClassInfo]LocalizedResourceName=0%SystemRoot%\System32\Shell32.dll,-21727

Method 1:

  • Launch Windows Explorer . On the Tools menu choose Folder Options. Select the View tab.
  • Uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types is known."
  • Uncheck "Hide protected files of the operating system (Recommended)."
  • Press Apply and OK.
  • Delete the Desktop.ini file whose contents are:

[shellClassInfo]LocalizedResourceName=0%SystemRoot%\System32\Shell32.dll,-21727
  • In:
  • Drive: \ Documents and Settings \ All Users \ Start Menu \ Programs \ Startup
  • Drive: \ Documents and Settings \ All Users \ Start Menu \ Programs
  • Drive: \ Documents and Settings \ All Users \ Start Menu
  • or Drive is the drive letter where Windows is installed.

You must delete the Desktop.ini file. Press Yes to confirm.

Method 2:

  • Click Start, Run. Enter msconfig in the dialog box that opens and click OK.
  • Click on the Startup tab, then uncheck the box next to the line Desktop.ini.
  • Confirm by clicking OK.

Restart your PC.
