AJAX - Features and limitations

The advantages of using AJAX

Websites using AJAX enjoy the following benefits:
  • A reactive interface: as AJAX can locally modify the web page.
  • Speed of execution: as only the data that must be modified are exchanged using the HTTP protocol.
  • Improved ergonomics: AJAX allows for example to perform real-time controls in the forms, integration with the HTTP server are done in the background.

Limitations of AJAX

In return, the AJAX model has the following limitations:
  • Only recent browsers that support the XMLHttpRequest Javascript object are able to correctly interpret an AJAX page.
  • Search engines may not be able to index all content published with AJAX.

Thus, it is essential to provide an alternative to AJAX in your web pages!
