Microsoft has announced a major update for its messaging service, Outlook.com, which now supports the IMAP protocol. This update thus allows the synchronization of Outlook.com with email clients for desktop. Outlook.com was already compatible with most on mobile apps via the Exchange ActiveSync (EAS): tablets and smartphones running Windows Phone, iOS and Android.
IMAP compatibility with third-party email clients
The EAS protocol is however not supported by all applications (Mail and Thunderbird for MacOS).
This issue has been corrected with the integration of IMAP protocol, which as a reminder, retrieve a copy of the e-mails stored on a mail server.
The configurations for the IMAP protocol on your email clients, are as follows:
Incoming IMAP
- Server: imap-mail.outlook.com
- Server Port: 993
- Encryption: SSL
Outgoing SMTP:
- Server: smtp-mail.outlook.com
- Server Port: 587
- Encryption: TLS
