Mageia - Choosing a version

The Mageia distribution now includes 5 different desktop environment, namely:
- Mate
- Cinnamon.

The Mandriva distribution (formerly Mandrake) is no longer maintained since 2011. Its community moved to Mageia Linux.

The purpose of this guide is to help users in choosing the right version Mandriva/Mageia.
Many user wanting to try Mandriva download the Free Version! But it should be noted that the Free version doesn't come with proprietary software!
We'll shall have an overview of the different existing versions.
  • Free: involves the right to modify and distribute the software as you wish (see full definition)
  • Proprietary: is a program whose source code is private. It can only be developped/maintained by its creator: Ati, Nvidia, Windows ... (see full definition).

A proprietary software is not necessarily a paid software!
Mandriva Linux (valid for all versions), allows users to choose their desktop environment (the most popular being KDE and Gnome).
KDE is complete and can be customized with widgets ...

Gnome: is very simple and ergonomic. It is the best option for beginners.

There are several versions of Mandriva Linux (32 and 64 bits):
Mandriva One:
  • For: Novice users
  • Size: 700MB
  • Price: Free
  • Desktop Environment: KDE or Gnome
  • Architecture: 32-bit only
  • Description: Perfect for beginnerse. Mandriva One includes proprietary drivers (for your different hardware) and can be used as a Live CD.

Mandriva Free:
  • For: Advanced Users
  • Size: 4700MB (4.7GB)
  • Price: Free
  • Office: KDE and Gnome
  • Architecture: 32 or 64 bits
  • Description: 100% free without any proprietary software.

Mandriva Powerpack:
  • For: Novice users
  • Size: 4300MB (4.3GB)
  • Price: Pay
  • Office: KDE and Gnome
  • Architecture: 32 or 64 bits
  • Description: This version include all the feature of the One version, with some bonuses.
  • Q: Mandriva is free?
  • A: Only the following version are free: Mandriva Free and One
  • Q: Can I try Mandriva without installing it?
  • A: Yes, with One version you can run Mandriva as a Live CD.
  • Q: I want to install it, but I still need Windows?
  • A: You can install Mandriva and Windows on the same computer (Dual boot).
  • Q: How to uninstall Mandriva.?
  • A: Yes, you can simply delete the Linux partition and repair boot launcher with the Windows installation CD/DVD.
