Gentoo Linux - Enable Logging

The Gentoo offers different logging features. It is possible to install:

  • sysklogd which is the native set of utilities:

emerge sysklogd
=>Configuration file: /etc/syslog.conf

  • syslog-ng is an advanced system logger

emerge syslog-ng
=>Configuration file: /etc/syslog-ng/syslog-ng.conf

  • metalog is a highly customizable logging feature

emerge metalog
=>Configuration file: /etc/metalog.conf

Note that

In addition to using sysklogd or syslog-ng, it recommended to install logrotate that recycles old logs
emerge logrotate
=>Configuration file: /etc/logrotate.conf
