No audio devices are installed

Issue

When playing an audio file, Windows Vista prompt you with one of the following messages:

  • No audio device
  • No audio device is installed
  • No audio output device is installed
  • No mixer device is available

Solution

This simply means that Windows can not find drivers for your soundcard. To remedy this, simply follow the following procedure:

  • Open Device Manager by clicking Start/Run (or Windows key + R) and entering the following command:
    • devmgmt.msc
    • In the window that opens and click on the name of the computer.
    • In the Action menu, click Check for hardware changes.
  • This will reinstall the drivers for your sound card.
