Word - How to open a corrupted file

In this short tutorial you will learn how to open and repair a corrupted Word document:

Several solutions are available: Microsoft Word integrates a small utility to fix your corrupted documents.
  • Click File > Open.
  • Then select the corrupted Word file.
  • Click the drop-down menu to the right of the "Open" button and select "Open and Repair".

If the above method fails:
  • Click on File > Open.
  • Click on Files of type box
  • Click on Recover Text from Any File(*,*)
  • Select the corrupted Word file.
  • Click on "Open".
  • Only the text will be displayed (no formatting).
If none of the above method worked, you can always try to open the file with another software such as Wordpad.
  • Open Wordpad.
  • Click on File > Open.
  • Select the corrupted file.
