Operation and First Steps

Create your Profile

Like all other social networks, once registered on Facebook, you must first create a profile, that is to say, enter personal information on your identity, your studies and interests, choose what you are going to make public or semi-public (or keep private) from your personal data. Thus, Facebook encourages you to give details of your favorite movies, hobbies ... but also more personal information about your political or sexual orientation. See the ones you want to make public.

You can choose by clicking on the Privacy tab at the top right, what information will be visible or not, and by whom, whether about your profile, posting your Mini Feed, or applications that you use.


Each time you log in, the page that displays your own page, and customize the applications you have installed.

The general home page, which you access by entering your username and password, displays a main column, the News Feed, the continuous news-wire on the activities of friends listed in your address book: events they have registered groups they have joined, photo albums posted, new friends ... Knowing this information are displayed if they chose to make them public.
The right column shows your invitations: If you are approached by new friends wanting to be in your address book, invited to join thematic groups, to events, to install new applications ...

Bottom right display your new notifications or "your" news: new friends, new applications, developments in the games you have installed (for example, for the Vampires game, if you were attacked and lost points! ) ...

Below are shown the last restated articles (status updates) to your friends birthdays to come, some people (friends of friends) you are likely to know, and your upcoming events, you attend, or you have been invited too.

Links at the top of the page to see the items on your friends (their new statutes, those who are online at the same time you ...), messages (inbox, sent messages ...) and to access your profile.

On your profile page, displays your own news feed, your Mini Feed in the center. Below are shown the various personal and professional information about you that you have chosen to make public, and the applications you have installed. For example, your Wall (wall) is displayed with that What have written your friends.

To the left are displayed application icons you installed a block with your friends and their photos, networks (France, HEC ...) which belong friends, and another block with the groups of which you are members, possibly other applications.

Expand your Network of Friends

An integrated search engine allows you to find the possibly of registered friends or colleagues profiles and view their profiles. You can then decide to add them to your contact list, call your Facebook friends or "friends". Your friends list grows quickly, in as your findings and other user requests. To enlarge your circle of friends, you can also use the "Find your friends using email," which appears on the homepage. This feature allows you to use the address book related to your e-mail address to automatically search through Facebook the people who are already enrolled. To do this in the area Your Email, enter your e-mail. This will only work for the email addresses offered in the drop down menu (, ...). If this is not the case for you, click the link provided Skip top right. Indicate in the area Email Password the password you use for your mail. Click the Find button. If you have friends who are on Facebook, the list will appear, with their photo, name, and email address. You can then add those contacts to your list of friends by clicking on the Add button to friends.

The list of contacts in your address book that are not registered in Facebook will also appear on this page. You can invite by ticking the boxes in front of the names. Your contacts will receive an invitation letter from you. If you do not want to send them an invitation message, clear the Select All / None box. Finish by clicking Invite to Join.

===Join and Create Groups and Events
A host of "groups" are themes on Facebook: group of former students of your school, your company sometimes for political causes, interests, to meetings, "just for fun" groups ...

You will start soon to receive email invitations from your friends (or friends of friends) to join these groups. You can search for groups by topics, by entering a keyword in the search box at the "Groups" tab. Once on the group's home page, click "Join". Beware, some groups are restricted, and therefore subject to the prior approval of the moderator.

By the same logic, you can sign up for "events", which are displayed for example on the news feed, over the events that your friends are taking place. You can also see which events are organized by your friends or which ones which they participate, click on the "Events" icon to the left of the home page of Facebook.

Post an Ad

Without reaching the level of eBay, Facebook still has a classified ad rather elaborated, through its application Classifieds (Marketplace), which allows you to sell an item, barter, or rent a property.

To post your ad, go to the menu on the left of your home page and click on Classifieds. Then choose the category in which you sell your product (goods for sale, free goods ...). Fill out as clearly as possible so your form by inserting photos. Your ad can then be inserted in your profile and in the classifieds.

Unlike eBay Classifieds is not based on an auction system, but you can lower the price over the day if you can not sell your item. Attention unlike eBay, the transaction is between the buyer and you: in case of problems, there is no possibility of using Facebook or scoring system for the reputation of sellers and buyers.

Protect Your Privacy

By default, all members of your network can see your profile. You can keep certain information confidential or share with your friends. Click the link Privacy (Confidentiality) at the top right of the page. In this page, you can configure privacy in eight areas:
  • Profile allows you to manage who can see your profile, your contact information, a list of your contacts, photos (and photos you are tagged), sent items, online status or update. To do this, click the Profile link. And specify in areas, the desired level of security. This goes All my networks and all my friends (all my networks and all of my friends) Only me (just me), to Some of my friends (some of my friends): here you can select which of your friends will see this or that information on your profile. Be especially careful with some areas such as Profile, Videos or Photos Tagged of You (photos you're tagged), Mobile Phone, or your email address. There, it is best to choose the level or Only my friends Only me. Click Save. In the case of images tagged, it will save you disappointments like to see appear in the News Feed or in your profile to view all photos of you during a drunken night. Indeed, when one of your friends launches its album, by default, it is accessible to all his friends from the News Feed, with the caption names of persons therein been tagged.
  • Search default: everyone can see if you are registered by typing your name into the search engine. You can choose who can find you.
  • News Feed and Mini-Feed: By default, Facebook will show most of your actions on your home page. In Part News Feed and Mini-Feed, you can decide finer updates about you sent to your friends. To do this, click on News Feed and Mini-Feed and check just authorized events, and click Save Changes.
  • Applications: this security will hide some applications or remove them completely, but especially to choose the personal information which they provide access. Three tabs are available in the top of the page: Added Applications lists the applications used. To delete, click Remove. If the mention Privacy setting is indicated to the right of the name of one of them, click to specify who can access the information generated by this application. Authorized Applications lists the applications you allow access to your personal information. To cancel these permissions, click Remove next to the name. Other Applications shows firstly the personal information you allow access to all applications used by other registered you and on the other hand, the list of applications you have blocked. Confirm these tabs by clicking Save.
  • Block People: You can prevent a person to search, create a social link, see your profile. To do this, type the name in the Person area of the Block People section and click the Search button. In the list that appears, click the Block Person link to the right of the name. In the Block List section, you have the list of people stranded. To unlock, click Remove next to its name.
  • Limited Profile: You can also create a limited profile for some people only see certain information. For example, to your colleagues enrolled on Facebook only see the professional section of your profile. To do this, first create the limited profile by clicking the Edit Settings link in the Limited Part Profile. And select just the elements that should be visible. Here, for our example, Work Info, Education Info Personal Info. Then, at the bottom right of that page, in the Person zone, repeat the same manipulations as in the Block People security type to create a list of people who will have access only to the limited profile. Click Save.


Facebook is characterized by the multitude of applications it offers, which are displayed as individual columns on the user profile page. Facebook Instant Messaging

No download is required and the tool is supposed to work with all major web browsers.

Some options are available, such as the ability to open the chat window in a smaller size than that proposed by default. Similarly, we can insert some smileys.

To avoid being disturbed while consulting your Wall, you can show you away status. The history is limited to your conversation. Facebook only allows messaging chat with one person at a time.

If you talk to a person and the person adds something on your profile, you will be notified in the chat.

Microsoft, Windows Live Messenger publisher, launched end of April 2008 its instant messaging application for Facebook. You can import your mini-feed for updates other services like Flickr, Picasa, Yelp, Digg, or Del.ic.ious.

Simply click on "Import" at the top of the mini-feed. These new updates will appear on the mini-feed your profile, and the flow of activities that appears in your friends.

Unsubscribe from Facebook

Following protests from many users on the difficulties to unsubscribe permanently and erase all traces of Facebook, the start-up has simplified unsubscribing for a total and definitive procedure. Indeed, Facebook initially allowed subscribers to unsubscribe, while preserving users' personal information on the servers of Facebook, in case they wanted to reactivate their account.
