Windows 7 - How to change the icon of a Library ?



To change the icon of Library and make use of a custom one, follow the below procedure:

First you must display hidden files and those managed by the system:
  • To do this in an Explorer window, click on Organize/Folder and Search option. Select the View tab.
  • Check the "Show hidden files, folders and drives". Click on OK.


Go to Computer, Local Disk, Users, [Username], AppData, Roaming, Microsoft, Windows, Libraries. The library definition files should be displayed.
  • Drag the icon you want to change in the Notepad window.
  • Search for the <iconReference>path of icon</iconReference>, it ususally lies below the <islibraryPinned>true</islibraryPinned> line. If it is absent you must create it. Instead of the path to the icon , put the full path to the icon you want to used.
  • Save and exit Notepad. The new icon is immediately put in use
  • Finally Hide hidden files and those managed by the system.
  • To do this in an Explorer window, click on Organize/Folder and Search option. Select the View tab.
    • Uncheck the "Show hidden files, folders and drives". Click on OK.
