Windows XP - How to disable the Automatic update feature

Issue

I'm using Windows XP and after each update (minor), I'm prompted to restart my PC.

This is quite annoying, I've already install the important security updates and I don't require the automatic update feature for the time being.

Solution

To disable the Automatic update feature:
  • Click on Start
  • Run
  • Type the following command:
    • net stop wuauserv
  • Of course if you want to restore this service do a:
    • net start wuauserv
