HP Pavilion 2000 screen goes black

I have an HP pavilion 2000 entertainment. It came with vista which I replaced with windows. Replaced the monitor as well. Yesterday it started going (almost) completely black. It’s running fine because I can hear sounds as well as see the desktop screen if I get the right lighting. I restarted it in safe mode and it does not go black. So I’m assuming I can rule out a physical problem. Other than that I have no clue what it is.
