Files not visible but folders are; Seagate GoGlex FreeAgent 2 TB external drive

Hi all,
I have a Seagate GoGlex FreeAgent 2 TB external drive with many files, photos and videos. Running Windows 7 (yes... 7). External drive has been flawless for some years, backs up everything automatically. Suddenly I cannot view ANY files. All folders appear to be showing but are EMPTY. The Properties show that nearly half of the 2 TB are used.... so I’m hopeful the files are still IN THERE...
At first, PC was not even recognizing the device but I unplugged, restarted PC and plugged in external drive power, then the USB connection. It’s connected through a USB hub, and perhaps the hub or cable is just OLD and malfunctioning? I’m terrified I’ve lost important files and years of family photos. Please help.
