Garbage collection vs explicit memory cleanup in java

Most non-java programmers are annoyed at the garbage collection concept. I often see that they have a partial explanation for it ("because java are for lazy or junior programmers"). Across my readings, I have gathered some benefits of garbage collection but I am not sure how accurate they are, what are your opinions on this ?

GC allows to shift memory cleanup at a later stage, which can sped up the current execution,

GC allows for a faster memory allocation than malloc (because GC defragment memory in the heap),
