Adding people to my whatsapp group

hi   I have a whatsapp group with 118 members.  Lately i am finding that I cannot add people as even though i have put them in my contacts file they dont appear in the list when i try to add them to my group?   Anyone know what i am doing wrong.    Doesnt happen all the time just now and again.   I have an iphone 12 pro max.
