Laptop display problems

Hello, my compaq presario screen won't come on at all. when i press the power button the hdd and everything starts (i can even hear the windows logon sound) and the backlight on the screen comes on (becaue the screen goes grey) but there's nothing displayed on the actual screen. if anyone has ever had this problem please advice me on how to solve this. thank you
