Startup Menu bar doesn't auto-hide

Aloha,

The Startup Menu bar frequently refuses to auto-hide and takes up space on my screen.

Is there a way to force it to move out of the way?

I've heard it happens because "something wants attention" or some such.... If that's true, is there any way to find out what Windows is waiting for or what it wants?

This drives me crazy as it takes up screen space I don't have to spare.
