Sony VAIO blank screen

On powering, I receive a blank screen with the pointer visible and functional. Conversely if I press the web button, then I can do all the browsing from the same laptop. I have tried operating the laptop by using help of F8 and F10 buttons to get going with the Advanced Boot Options and Windows Error Recovery options, but have been unable to make a headway.
