Why wont my IP address register on my ps3!

I have looked for answer, tried everything, and it still doesn't work. I have put "automatic" for everything and it still doesn't work. I have used custom and it won't work. It just fails to detect an IP address every time. I have tried entering it manually and it still wouldn't detect. Please can someone help me ASAP, i just want to get back online and play again.
