Laptop screen will light up but it's black

Hello,
I left my lap top sitting open for a few hours and when I came back the screen was blank. I tried unplugging it and removing the battery and then holding down the power button for a minute. Then rebooting. It played me a nice little beeping tune and the screen flashed a few different colors and then it went right back to the blank screen. What next???
