Vaio Touchpad forcing me to hook up a mouse

OK people: Got Vaio last Jan and have yet to get comfortable with touchpad. Now, it seems that the pad works when it wants to forcing me to hook up a mouse. Is it possible that upgrading to Windows 8.1 that something got disabled with pad???
