Gateway laptop blank screen will not turn on

Computer has blank screen will not turn on. Took battery out, unplugged, held down power , plugged back in , reinserted battery but still will not start. There are two symbols by mouse looks like a lock with ""a in center another with "1" in center. Can you tell me what these mean and how to remove them also what else can I try to get the computer to start or reboot?
