No Desktop Icons

I have no desktop icons anymore on my windows xp laptop. I did research how to fix it and got this...

However when i do it, my icons appear, but as soon as I reboot it goes back to being blank. Ive checked add/remove programs for anything that shouldn't be there. but to no avail. I cant get my icons back, can some one please help.
