How do you store/retrieve your data incase of andriod meltdown?

My andoid was frozen on enter backup password instead of letting me swipe to open phone up. I removed the battery, rebooted and it was still frozen. I had to basically reboot the system from scratch and loss a lot of information (didn't back up). What makes the screen freeze anyway?
