"lost boot designation"

Evening All:

I have a 4Gb Sandisk Cruzer that has lost it's boot designation. I CANNOT format, open it, re-install partitons, write it all in zero's, nor mount it. I'm hoping someone here understands "lost boot designation" and what must be done to make pendrive operable once again.
