Installing Windows 7 in a Gateway Netbook

We got a Gateway netbook, model KAV60. it has been set to factory settings, and currently has no OS. It originally came with Window XP (there is a product key on the unit). I'd like to install Windows 7 on it. Can I? and is it available in a USB? I can only find it on disc, and there is no DVD drive on the netbook. I'd like to make it useable again. Help!

It would be illegal to use a pirated version of Win 7. I suggest you try one of the Linux versions. Ubuntu is one of the best.

I wasn't talking about a pirated version of Windows 7. I'm willing to buy it; I just don't know if it's available or if I can install it on that model. Or Windows 8 if that's the only option. And telling me to "try one of the Linux versions" still doesn't help. HOW do I install something when I can't download anything?

You can't buy Windows 7 or 8 anymore. You will need to buy 8.1 and it's only available on a DVD.

You might be able to download a Linux version at your local Library.

You can buy a new version of that laptop on Amazon for less than you would pay for a copy of Windows.

hopefully you solved this long ago, but i was in same dilemma before christmas. since im not confident in my computer skills, i looked several places to come up with something i wasnt afraid to try. finally- Duh - i went to the Gateway website for support, and . . . click on LEFT Alt, then F10... BAM, windows files downloading! took me to windows boot screen, hit enter and recovery management started, from there it was simply restore process. At least from then i on i could use the darn netbook, and upgrade by dowloading at microsoft. IT WAS XP PREVIOUS TO OPERATING SYSTEM GONE, AND I HAD PRODUCT KEY ON NETBOOK. XP REINSTALLED, THEN CHOICE TO UPGRADE
