Windows 7 on acer laptop SD Slot Problem Reading

When I insert my micro SD card adapter into the SD slot on my laptop it is not being recognized. It used to just automatically pick it up, now it's neither picking it up nor showing it under "computer" and "devices with removable storage". This use to work just fine, and it works fine on my husband's laptop so I'm assuming it has nothing to do with the adapter being damaged.
