You can't Delete a Smart Art Shape

Hi. I have looked everywhere for a solution to this problem and have yet to find one. For all accounts and purposes you cannot delete a smartart shape in PowerPoint2013. The delete button simply doesn't work and there is no remove shape button on the task pane anywhere
