My mouse isn't working - Windows 8, Ctrl + F5 not working

Hallo.

My laptop's mouse pad is very temperamental and there are times that the mouse doesn't work. Normally Ctrl + F5 works but then there is the rare occasion it refuses to work. Any tips/help/advice? Much appreciated!!
