Toshiba laptop audio jack not detecting

ey guys some help here please! I'm using a Toshiba laptop and it has both a jack for audio and a jack for a mic! when I put in the mic cable it is read but when I put on the audio cable it is not read! could this be a drivers problem or could the port be damaged?....I've never opened or dropped my pc nothing! what could be happening
