HP Laptop not connecting to an external Screen

I need help,

I have a HP laptop that was working fine till was formatted and loaded with win 8 Enterprise. The VGA connection to a projector or external screen stopped working.

I formatted again and loaded win 7 which recently upgraded to win 10. Now the computer detects the addition screen when plugged in. However nothing shows on the other screen. i have played with the settings with no luck, what should i do. can anyone help?
