Lost gmail file data.

Having been away from my computer several days, I returned to find that all of my gmail docs had disappeared. Somehow (not sure how) I was able to retrieve trash and deleted gmail, but not the gmails retained in folders. I am very much a novice in this area and would appreciate any assistance that you can give me to retrieve the folder gmails. Thank you so much!
