Laptop to samsung TV via HDMI cable

hi, i am trying to run my laptop on the tv. both laptop and tv have hdmi ports. i connect the hdmi cable. i went to laptop control panel, hit extend screen display. now on my laptop it is reading that a samsung is plugged in, but when i select the input on my t.v. it says cable not connected. please, can anyone give me insight on this problem?
