Toshiba Satellite C660 - 26G Laptop wont boot up and freezes

Hi, i wondered if anyone could help please?

I have had my toshiba satellite laptop and few years and it normally works fine. it was actually fixed / restored a few months ago by a laptop repair shop but now it seems to be broken again. It turns on fine with or without the main battery (power cable plugged in) However i notice when i had the battery in and power cable the battery light at the front was showing red. Anyway i turn it on it comes up with the normal toshiba and the press F2 / F12 below as normal then onto to welcome and user part then it wont go any further it wont go as far as the home screen etc and i have tried the F2 and f12 function but i'm not sure what exactly to do when i'm in there! I have always tried 0 as i don't mind restoring factory settings as i have everything important backed up already.

Does anyone know what the problem is and can explain how to fix it. Could it be the BIOS battery, if so i'm sure i can replace it fine it seems easy enough.

p.s i want to fix it myself with some help of course!
