Connection kicking others off

When I get onto my laptop to use the internet, things run just fine. That's until someone gets on the computer downstairs, then I have to boot them off so I can do what I have to do or it won't get done. Wifi on my ipod works just fine. Is it because my laptop is old and I need to get a new one? Or do I need to go back to using the Ethernet cables again.
