Turn off FN keys?

I have a gateway laptop with Windows 8. I right now if I'm playing a game where you need to use one of the function buttons I have to hold down the FN button before pressing a function key, otherwise it will do whatever is printed on the key (turn the screen off, change the screen lighting, etc.). Is there some way to reverse this? I've looked everywhere I can think of in the settings but I must be over looking it somewhere. The menus on this thing are very poorly designed.
