Cant login to email

When I set up my Gmail account I used a friends phone because I didn't have one, the now live in another state. I also put in my alternate email, and I used security questions. I would lil to know why it wont let me go to the security questions? It will send a code to the alternate email but will not log me in. Can someone please help me with this?
