Copying dates in Excel

Hello,

when I copy a date from one cell to another(not to the cell directly below), it appears as a number(eg 48123) rather than the date I copied(eg 12/02/2017)
I've tried to format it to display as a date but nothing changes...
what am I doing wrong??
