Minecraft Adds Free Female Character

Just over 7 months after Microsoft acquired Minecraft's parent company Mojang, the game announced the addition of a female lead character.

"When most players begin their Minecraft adventure there aren't many looks to choose from. In fact, you only get to play as our blue-shirted friend. Now, everyone loves Steve - he's probably the most famous minecrafter in the world, and has excellent stubble," quipped Minecraft's Owen Hill in a blog post. "But jolly old Steve doesn't really represent the diversity of our playerbase. For that reason, we're giving all players opportunity to play with an Alex skin instead." Compared to Steve, Alex offers thinner arms, redder hair, a pony tail, and most notably, the pronoun "she." Alex will make her debut on all consoles on Wednesday. Alex will roll out to mobile users this summer.

While the addition of a free female character is a major move for Minecraft, Hill had two more announcements on Monday. PlayStation users will get an additional skin pack this week: The Simpsons. The skin pack bundle will feature Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie in addition to Principal Seymour Skinner, Groundskeeper Willie, and many more. The Simpsons skin pack is already available on Microsoft consoles. Xbox 360 users will also get new features. Minecraft Xbox One Edition players have had more achievements than their last-gen console counterparts for some time, but this update adds 30 more achievements to Xbox 360, bringing the total to 1000 gamerscore. Minecraft is also adding a new bundle of music tracks to Minecraft Xbox 360 Edition.
