Facebook Messenger Gets SMS Capability

Messenger users on Android smartphones can send SMS messages with stickers and voice clips directly from the app.

(CCM) — Facebook Messenger on Android has been bolstered with a brand new SMS messaging feature. Standard SMS functionality has been integrated into Facebook Messenger in most countries, meaning that users can now send and receive standard SMS messages alongside Facebook messages directly from the Messenger app. The company hopes that Messenger will become the default app for SMS messaging. "A lot of Android texting apps didn't keep up with the evolution of messaging, so we felt like we truly had to make Messenger the best SMS client for Android," explained David Marcus, Facebook's Vice President of Messaging Products. With Facebook Messenger, users are now able to share their location as well as send voice clips, stickers, and conventional text messages all over SMS.

Once SMS is enabled in Facebook Messenger's settings SMS conversations appear in purple bubbles alongside the standard blue Messenger conversation bubbles. SMS and Messenger conversations with the same person will be kept as separate threads. Since Apple does not allow the default SMS app to be changed there are no plans to bring the new feature to the iPhone.
