(CCM) — Instant messaging service WhatsApp has announced that it would be adding animated GIF support for its Android beta version users. The app will let users convert a 6-second video into a GIF and share it directly with individuals as well as groups using the app. A built-in editor also allows users to crop and resize the GIFs before sending them to anyone. The app then creates a "WhatsApp Animated GIFs" folder to store the animated graphics. These files are auto-compressed into mp4 files, saving memory and data and rendering them easily transferrable.

Since the app is only available in beta mode, users must register for Google Play’s beta testing program in order to download and access it. As an alternative, an APK file is available online. The company has also recently launched a Snapchat-like feature for its Android app that lets users draw on photos and videos as well as add emoji and stickers.
