Samsung Prepares for Ultra HD Phones
Samsung has announced new high capacity mobile memory packages for 4K playback and virtual reality.

(CCM) — Samsung is paving the way for a new generation of Ultra-HD, large-screen smartphones with the announcement of the industry's first 8 GB mobile memory packages. The new high capacity memory packages, called 8 GB LPDDR4 (low power, double data rate 4) mobile DRAM packages, will also be suited for tasks such as dual-camera use, smoother 4K UHD playback, and virtual reality. Tablets equipped with the new 8 GB chip packages will be able to run applications in virtual machines running different operating systems. The packages consume the same amount of power as Samsung's 4 GB DRAM packages, despite having twice the capacity, thanks to the company's proprietary low-power circuit design.

Samsung has not announced when the new 8 GB packages will be available, but it is possible that they will be used in the company's Galaxy S8 phone, which is expected to be launched in the first half of next year. Samsung has been pioneering the product of small form factor storage devices recently, including an ultra-compact 512 GB as well as a 256 GB microSD card.
