Sales of Android apps will exceed those of iOS apps for the first time this year, according to a report.
(CCM) — Android is set to topple Apple from the app sales top spot, according to a report by research firm App Annie. The report predicts that sales from Google's Play store and third-party Android stores combined will overtake consumer spending on apps in Apple's App Store for the first time this year. However, the report predicts that the App Store will remain the biggest single earner for the next five years and is predicted to generate $60 billion in gross consumer spending in 2021. In total, App Annie expects worldwide app spending on all platforms and in all app stores to surpass $139 billion in 2021.
Apple's App Store is the only place where owners of iOS devices can buy apps (unless their devices are jailbroken), but Android device owners can buy from any app store that they choose to use. Third-party stores are particularly popular in China, where Android users can access stores through well-known Chinese consumer brands such as Tencent, Xiaomi, Huawei, and Baidu. Third-party Android stores generated about $10 billion in app sales in 2016 and this is expected to double in 2017, according to App Annie.
