The music streaming service is recruiting in preparation for a surprise Spotify hardware launch.
(CCM) — Spotify looks set to take a leaf out of Snapchat's book by moving away from its software roots and surprising the market with a hardware offering. The company is looking to recruit a senior product manager "to deliver hardware directly from Spotify to existing and new customers; a category defining product akin to Pebble Watch, Amazon Echo, and Snap Spectacles," according to a Spotify job listing reproduced on the Zatznotfunny blog. The hardware plans appear to be at a very early stage, with the job listing goes on to specify: "You will define the product requirements for internet-connected hardware, the software that powers it, and work with suppliers/manufacturers to deliver the optimal Spotify experience to millions of users."
Spotify is also looking to fill two other roles: a product manager for voice and a director of product for natural language understanding. These suggest that Spotify may be looking to develop a piece of hardware similar to Amazon's Echo, which would be capable of playing music streamed from Spotify's music service in response to voice commands from users.
Snapchat caused a stir in September 2016 when it launched Spectacles, a pair of sunglasses with a built-in video camera.
